Scaling That Works: How Systems Create Real Growth

I’ve built and sold two eight-figure staffing agencies. The first I sold to a public company, and the second I sold in a private deal. Both reached eight figures, and both taught me invaluable lessons about scaling.

My vision today is to make entrepreneurship easier for anyone who wants to start, run, and grow a business. And one of the biggest parts of that is learning how to scale.

Scaling from the beginning

Scaling from the Start

When I first launched my staffing agency, I had no idea what I was doing. I put an ad in the Los Angeles Times for a title assistant and waited for resumes to land in my P.O. box. I’ll never forget the day I received the first one. It was from a woman named Karen, and it was the moment I decided to quit my job and bet on myself.

Not everyone is as risk-tolerant as I was, but for me, staying in a corporate cubicle felt riskier than going out on my own. I didn’t know what payroll taxes were when I placed my first temp, but I figured it out as I went. Within a year, we were doing $20k per month. A little later, we hit $100k per month. And five years in, we were at million-dollar weeks.

Why Scaling Matters

At the start, we were flying by the seat of our pants. But once I saw that we had a real business, I knew we needed to get serious. Scaling doesn’t just mean hiring more people… It means creating systems so that growth doesn’t break you.

We brought in a CPA. We built processes. We set up what we called a “war room” (whiteboards everywhere) and tracked every number. We automated whatever we could, and we hired leaders to manage branches across the country. We started acting like a big company before we were one.

That shift from hustling to scaling is what turned our agency into an eight-figure business and positioned us for a successful sale.

Now scaling with offshore team members is more accessible

Scaling Then vs. Scaling Now

Scaling today looks very different than it did twenty years ago. Back then, it meant building offices, hiring managers, and rolling out new tech systems. Today, I run a new kind of staffing agency, one built for the way we work now.

My entire team is offshore. They manage operations, recruiting, sourcing, onboarding, and client processes. I focus on vision, strategy, and the work I enjoy most, while they execute everything behind the scenes. And the best part? I get all of that for less than the cost of hiring one full-time admin here in the U.S.

Because of the systems my team has created; standard operating procedures, automation, and streamlined processes we can take on more clients, serve them better, and scale without constantly adding overhead.

What Scaling Really Means

Scaling isn’t about adding new business lines or piling on more work. Scaling is about doing more with what you already have. Faster, smarter, and better.

If you want to position your company for growth, or even for a future exit, you need systems that allow you to expand without your expenses growing at the same pace.

So let me ask you:

  • What’s one thing in your business that you’re not automating but could be this quarter?
  • Where could you put a process in place that would save you time and money?
