How to Overcome the Fear of Delegation When Starting a Business
Let’s talk about something real: the fear that some people have about starting their own business. For me, that wasn’t the scary part. What terrified me more was the idea of spending my life climbing a corporate ladder that didn’t lead anywhere I actually wanted to go. I’ve always had a high tolerance for risk, and I get that most people don’t. But if you’ve ever thought about going out on your own and felt stuck—this is for you.
Someone recently messaged me and said:
“I go to work every day with no fear. But jumping out on my own feels terrifying.”
And they’re not alone. Fear is one of the biggest barriers that keeps people stuck in jobs they’ve outgrown. But here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t have to do it alone, and you don’t have to let fear call the shots.
Fear Is Real, but It’s Not the End of the Story
When I started my first business, I struggled with letting go. It felt risky. What if they didn’t do it right? What if it just created more work for me? I wanted freedom, but learning to trust others with parts of the business was one of the hardest lessons—and the most important. Because scaling doesn’t come from doing more yourself. It comes from building the right team to do it with you.
What helped me move through the fear? Delegation.
Building a support team changed everything. And no, it didn’t cost a fortune. I built a powerful, reliable offshore team at a fraction of the cost of hiring domestically.
Entrepreneurship Shouldn’t Equal Burnout
There’s a glorified startup mentality that says you need to wear every hat, work around the clock, and struggle to be “worthy” of success. I completely reject that idea.
Business should be about profitability, not about playing the role of the starving entrepreneur.
Yes, there may be a hustle in the beginning. But the goal is to build something that actually pays you, financially and energetically.
When I began coaching other founders, I saw the same pattern. They thought they had to do everything themselves or felt guilty handing off tasks. And that mindset was keeping them stuck.
A Client’s Story: From Burnout to Growth
One of my clients, Bennett, is a great example. He’s an attorney who was trying to do everything himself even though he already had a paralegal. He told me he felt like he should be the one handling every task.
Fast forward 18 months:
- He grew from one team member to five
- He massively increased his revenue
- He’s now bringing in hundreds of thousands more than he was before
All of that growth came from shifting his mindset and choosing to delegate.
Delegation Let Me Focus on My Zone of Genius
When I tried to do it all, I missed a lot of important things. Emails from potential clients would sit in my inbox for weeks. I was the bottleneck in my own business.
Once I built my virtual assistant team, I got intentional. I focused only on tasks that moved the needle in content creation, relationship building, and strategy. My team handled the rest.
That one change allowed me to write my book, land bigger clients, and step fully into my zone of genius. And it gave me space to have a life outside my business, too.
Delegation is About the People You Hire
Delegation isn’t just practical. It’s generous.
By giving people the opportunity to do meaningful work, you’re empowering them. You’re creating space for growth—not just for yourself, but for everyone involved in your business.
Let go of the guilt. When you delegate, you’re not dumping tasks. You’re leading.
How I Built My Team (And Why You Can Too)
When I sold my first business for $28 million, it was because of the team I built. Having the right people in the right seats was everything.
Now, with today’s global talent market, you can build a highly effective team from the very beginning without the overhead of traditional hiring.
That’s why I created A-Team to help founders like you get world-class support at 80 percent less than what you’d pay hiring in the U.S. We even handle training and replacements if someone’s not the right fit. I built this because I know how hard it is to do it alone, and how much easier it becomes when you don’t.
TLDR: Delegate to Grow with Confidence
If you’re afraid of starting your own business, I want you to know this:
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to stop doing it all alone.
Delegation helped me go from overwhelmed to thriving. It gave me the structure, space, and support to do what I love and grow my business with intention.
So whether you’re just starting out or ready to scale, think about how you can let go of the things that don’t light you up and pass them on to someone who would love to do them.
