Why Your Sales Copy Isn’t Working (And How to Fix It Without Guessing)
Sales copy can make or break your business. But too often, it falls flat, even when you’re following all the “right” advice.
So why doesn’t your copy convert? And how do you write content that actually connects (and sells), without overthinking it?
This post breaks down what’s actually wrong with most sales copy and how to use the Customer Copy Code to fix it. You’ll walk away knowing exactly what to write, without starting from a blank screen.
Why Most Sales Copy Fails
If you’ve ever stared at a blinking cursor and thought, “What do I write about?” you’re not alone.
Here’s why your sales copy probably isn’t working:
- You’re talking about yourself, not your audience
- You’re guessing what your audience cares about
- You’re writing “AI to AI” instead of human to human
- You’re pitching instead of listening
- You’re talking to the wrong audience (like other recruiters, not decision-makers)
- You’re giving up too early (one post isn’t a strategy)
- You’re following copy templates that don’t reflect your voice
- You’re afraid of being annoying, so you play it safe
Here’s the truth: comments without clients don’t matter. If your content isn’t reaching your ideal client, it’s just noise.
The Fix: The Customer Copy Code
The Customer Copy Code flips everything. Instead of guessing what to write, you use your client’s exact words.
What happens next? People read your content and think, “Whoa, they’re reading my mind.”
Where to Find Copy That Converts:
Sales calls – Record and analyze how people describe their challenges
Private groups – Forums, Slack, Facebook groups. Places where people speak freely
Reddit – Anonymity = honesty
Amazon book reviews – See how your audience describes leadership, team building, etc.
LinkedIn recommendations – Get direct language about what clients value in candidates
These places are full of unedited, raw, real language, exactly what you need to create content that lands.
What to Look For in Customer Copy
When you gather copy, look for these themes:
- Problems – What’s frustrating them?
- Emotions – What’s making them feel stuck or overwhelmed?
- Desires – What outcomes are they hoping for?
- Language – What exact phrases are they using?
- Positioning – What do they value in a solution?
You’re not just collecting words. You’re learning how your audience thinks, and positioning yourself as the answer.
How to Turn Copy Into Content
Here’s how I do it, step by step:
- Copy and paste a real question from Reddit, LinkedIn, or a client call
- Use that exact phrase as your post headline
- Add your expert insights or story
- End with: “What do you think?” or “How would you handle this?”
That’s it.
You can even reuse the post again and again. I’ve had posts go viral multiple times just by reposting the same message.
Copy works not because it’s clever. It works because it’s true.
How to Create a Month of Posts in 2 Hours
Want to never run out of things to say?
Here’s how I created two months of posts in two hours:
Start with a prompt like: “What are 25 things [your ICP] is worried about right now?”
Search Reddit or private forums for related posts
Copy + paste their questions or comments
Write posts that answer them directly
Schedule a weekly “Customer Copy Code” writing session
I now have a content bank that my virtual assistants pull from daily.
Where to Use the Customer Copy Code
Cold outreach emails
LinkedIn posts
Instagram, Facebook, or wherever your audience hangs out
Landing pages, proposals, decks
Even sales calls – because your pitch will match their thoughts
Remember: you’re not selling staffing, recruiting, or services. You’re showing people you understand their problem and can solve it.
Listen Better, Write Less
The magic isn’t in writing better. It’s in listening better.
Your clients are telling you everything you need to know. You just have to go find it.
Use their words. Skip the guesswork. Write copy that works.
