If you think being able to do everything yourself is your superpower… it might actually be the thing holding you back.
I’m Diane Prince. I scaled a staffing agency to $28 million and sold it. Now I help founders scale smart, with systems that support growth without burning you out.
And here’s the truth:
Doing it all yourself isn’t just exhausting.
It’s expensive.
Let’s break down the delegation formula that completely shifted how I think about time, money, and growth.
Most Founders Still Think Like Employees
This is the mindset shift.
Employees value effort.
Founders must value ROI.
If you’re making $100,000 a year, your time is worth about $50 an hour (assuming roughly 2,000 working hours).
So why are you doing $20-an-hour tasks?
Sit with that.
Why are you:
- Scheduling interviews?
- Managing your own calendar?
- Scrubbing resumes?
- Confirming meetings?
- Sorting your inbox?
Just because you can do it doesn’t mean you should.
Your job is to grow the business.
Modern recruiting operators don’t scale through effort alone, they scale through automation and repeatable systems. As The Digital Recruiter explains in “Why I’ll Always Push Automation and Content for Recruiters“, its perspective on why automation and content matter, founders who systemize outreach and follow-up free themselves to focus on revenue-driving work instead of operational noise.
“I Can Just Do It Myself.”
I hear this constantly.
“Sure, I can just handle it.”
Yes. You can.
But you don’t need to. And you probably shouldn’t.
Perfectionism is a growth killer.
Even if you can do it well, someone else can likely do it just as well, or better, if you set them up properly.
Delegation isn’t about giving up control.
It’s about creating clarity.
The $20 Task That Cost Me a Big Client
Here’s a real example.
I once lost a major client because I was buried in admin work. I missed the follow-up window. By the time I responded, they had signed with someone else.
That deal alone would have paid for a full-time VA for six months.
Think about that.
One placement fee is often more than an offshore VA’s annual salary.
So when you tell yourself you’re “saving money” by doing everything yourself, you might actually be making the most expensive mistake in your business.
Leads don’t wait. Prospects don’t wait. And if you’re buried in admin when they reply, they’re off Googling someone else.
Many recruiting founders discover this only after hitting burnout. In The Digital Recruiter’s conversation with Ashley Woods on rebuilding without burning out, the lesson is clear: sustainable growth requires operational support, not reactive scrambling. Systems protect revenue.
The Delegation Formula
Let’s make this practical.
Step 1: Write down everything you do in a week.
Everything. Meetings. Admin. Sales. Follow-ups. Inbox. Calendar. Sourcing.
Step 2: Calculate your hourly rate.
Take your net annual income and divide it by 2,000 hours.
That’s your approximate hourly value.
Step 3: Delegate anything that can be done for less than your rate.
Unless you absolutely love doing it, and it’s strategic.
Be honest. Most admin tasks are not strategic.
High-performing staffing leaders consistently emphasize disciplined focus over activity. As highlighted in Staffing Mastery’s interview on the advice leaders need to hear now, clarity around value creation, not constant motion, is what drives sustainable profitability.
Easy Wins You Can Delegate Right Now
Here are things I no longer do:
- Calendar management
- Inbox triage (my team tells me exactly what needs my attention)
- Candidate sourcing
- Admin follow-ups
- Confirming meetings
- Sales follow-up tracking
Every Monday, my team confirms any calendar invites that didn’t get replies. We don’t waste blocked time. We don’t lose momentum.
This is why I built my A-Team. It changed everything.
The Hard Truth
Every hour you spend on admin is an hour you’re not:
- Selling
- Strategizing
- Building systems
- Creating visibility
- Growing your top-of-funnel
Sometimes “staying busy” is just procrastination in disguise.
It feels responsible. It feels productive.
But it’s inefficient, and it’s expensive.
Quick Exercise
Pull up your calendar from last week.
Ask yourself:
What three hours could I have freed up if I had help?
That’s three hours you could have spent:
- Closing clients
- Improving systems
- Building content
- Or honestly, resting
You don’t just need a VA.
You need a system.
High-Impact Founder Work vs. Admin Work
Right now, while I’m recording this, my team is:
- Managing LinkedIn
- Booking interviews
- Handling follow-ups
- Organizing proposals
- Moving leads through the pipeline
So when I show up on sales calls, people already feel like they know me. That’s high-impact work.
I stay at the top of the funnel.
I stay in my zone of genius.
My team handles the rest.
They focus on their highest-impact tasks.
I focus on mine.
That’s how you scale.
Delegation Is a Leadership Move
Delegation isn’t a luxury.
It’s leadership.
Founders who scale quickly let go early.
You didn’t start your business to babysit your inbox.
You started it to grow. To create freedom. To build something meaningful.
It’s not about doing everything yourself.
It’s about doing the right things, the highest-impact things, and building a team that handles the rest.
Your Action Step
Take 30 minutes today.
- Calculate your hourly rate.
- List your weekly tasks.
- Pick one thing to delegate this week.
Start there.
Because entrepreneurship gets easier the moment you stop trying to be the admin, and start acting like the founder.
